Wagner sets off ‘Arms Race’ Amid Ukraine War as Russian Energy Giant Gazprom Aims Private Army

Ukraine War

A Russian company, Gazprom, is said to be forming its own private army, taking inspiration from the Wagner Group in Ukraine. Recently, the Prigozhin-led Wagner group has engaged in conflicts with Russia’s military. Gazprom’s move is backed by a Russian law on “fuel and energy complex security” which grants Gazprom the authority to establish a private security firm. According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, the law requires entities to hold at least a 50% stake in the newly formed private military company.
