Ochakiv, a strategic Ukrainian outpost in the northwestern Black Sea, has endured months of Russian shelling. The town with a pre-war population of 15,000 was a target in the very first hours of Russia’s February 24 invasion. Ukrainian officials in the strategic port hope it can serve to consolidate Kyiv’s gains in the southern Kherson region. The strategic Ukrainian Black Sea naval base lies on the mouth of the Dnipro River which has become a key battle line in the ongoing war. Ochakiv serves as the gateway to the southern regions of Kherson and Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia.
