Visit Japanese Admiral Yamamoto’s Plane Wreck from WW2

Yamamoto’s Plane

Visit to Admiral Yamamoto’s remote Jungle Plane Wreck on Bougainville Island. The Pearl Harbor mastermind’s “Betty” Bomber was shot down by U.S. P38 fighters (Operation Vengeance) April 18, 1943, near Buin, setting back the Japanese war effort. No one had been there for years. (Betty=Mitsubishi G4M Hamak.1) We were there to see the fish market at Buin, but thought this would be an interesting side trip. Previous removal of parts by Japanese leads to confusion. But this is the real deal. If you’ve seen Tora Tora Tora, this is how it ended for the reluctant warrior. Another Betty in the formation crashed into the sea.
