The Russian population isn’t breaking
I don’t think we’ve ever had a solid grasp of just how much (or how little) the average Russian supports the ongoing war in Ukraine. There’s just not a ton of clear data pointing in one direction or another that is really representative of the nation as a whole. This article, by a Russian historian, suggests that the general public is doing just fine and may in fact be on board with the overall war effort.
