SS Ionian “If War should Come…” (1939)

If War should Come

A 1939 documentary produced by the GPO Film Unit that follows the route of the SS Ionian as she plys her trade in the Mediterranean. The film discusses how the Royal Navy will protect merchant shipping “if war should come.”

The SS Ionian was a 3114 ton British steam merchant operated by Ellerman & Papayanni Lines of Liverpool. Ironically, this would be her last peacetime voyage. She was sunk by a German naval mine laid by uboat U22 1.5 miles 132° from Newarp Lightship on 23 November 1939. Thankfully all 37 members of her crew were picked up by HMS Hastings.
