Russian Troops Begin Belarus Deployment

Russian troops have arrived in Belarus

The first of 9,000 Russian troops have arrived in Belarus. Minsk and Moscow say they’re setting up a joint unit to defend the borders of Belarus.

Its leader Alexander Lukashenko claims his country faces threats from neighbouring Ukraine and its western allies.

Ukraine accuses Moscow of trying to draw Belarus into the war.

Political scientist Yekaterina Schulmann left Russia shortly after the war started. She told DW why she thinks Russia and Belarus have set up this joint unit.
