Vladimir Putin held a meeting with his security council members amid rumours that Russia and Belarus are moving towards a “merger”. Russian political scientist Andrei Piontkovsky says that Putin may have signed a pact to unite Russia, Belarus and Ukraine in the meet. Piontkovsky believes that Putin will use former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to sign the pact. Earlier this month, Putin thanked the West for making his decades-old dream to merge Russia with neighbouring Belarus come true. The Russian president vowed to strengthen technological, industrial, agricultural and cultural ties with Belarus. Both Russia and Belarus have faced sanctions from the West, as Minsk has been accused of supporting the Ukraine invasion.
