Putin Calls Mali Leader, Sends Warplanes & Aid | Is Russia’s Africa Outreach Aimed At The West?

Ukraine War

Russia has given six warplanes including five military jets and a helicopter to Mali’s Goita regime on August 9. This is not the first time the African nation has received military supplies from the Russian government. In April 2022, Mali accepted an arms delivery of two Mi-24P helicopters and multiple surveillance radars from Russia. A day after Putin and Goita’s call, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken left Kigali, Rwanda. Blinken began his tour of Africa on August 7 to bring old allies closer to the US in times of heightened geopolitical tension. Many see Russia’s military support to Mali as a message from Putin to other strongman regimes.
