No Fast Track Membership: NATO Bursts Ukraine’s Bubble

NATO Bursts Ukraine’s Bubble

Russia ceremoniously annexed four Ukrainian regions on the 30th September. Ukraine is outraged. It has, perhaps forever, lost 20% of its territory to Russia. Ukraine too made an unexpected and a very significant move on the same day. Ukraine crossed the threshold and applied for fast-tracked membership of NATO. Russia has always feared Ukraine would become a NATO member state and bring the alliance’s forces and weapons on its doorstep. But Ukraine’s grand move of applying for “fast tracked” membership is purely a one-sided hope – one which is not shared by NATO and its most prominent members. It’s not easy to join NATO. Countries must meet a whole set of requirements to qualify for membership. Do you think Ukraine acted prematurely? Do watch to know more.
