By 1966, the recruitment of troops for Vietnam among the American population had been increasing for fifteen consecutive months. The government forced more and more men to go to war, and once they were selected, it was very difficult to escape duty. Nearly fifty thousand men were drawn each month to fight, and if they refused the call of duty, they could end up in jail. However, the enlistment was very unpopular in society, so the government looked for ways to make it more palatable.
