Hypersonic Launch Vehicles? Why 2018 Test Shows China’s Balloon Capabilities Extend Beyond Spying

Hypersonic Launch Vehicles?

China’s surveillance balloon made headlines last week after it violated the American airspace. The balloon was ultimately shot down in dramatic style by a US F-22 Raptor jet off the South Carolina coast. In 2018, China’s state-owned CCTV broadcast a test balloon that dropped what appeared to be hypersonic weapons. The video showed a high-altitude balloon carrying three wedge-shaped payloads, which looked like hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs). The video showed the balloon going up to a certain height and then dropping them as part of a weapons test. Watch this video to understand what China is planning to do with its surveillance balloons.
