As the war in Ukraine grinds into its seventh month, Russia’s anxious neighbours are looking beyond NATO to bolster their defences. Countries like Latvia and Estonia are leaving nothing to chance in preparing for any potential attacks. Latvia, a NATO member and Russian neighbour, plans to bring back mandatory military service in case of a Russian attack. Latvia’s defence minister told Insider in July his country wants to prepare for a sudden attack that might catch NATO off guard.
