Chiang Kai-Shek’s Nationalist Army continue the Northern Expedition, pushing the Nationalist Pacification Army of Zhang Zuolin further north. When the NRA took Shanghai and Nanjing it was a serious blow to the northern warlords, however disaster struck. The Nanjing incident and Shanghai massacre led to internal conflicts between the KMT and CCP of the First United Front.

Chiang Kai-Shek was ousted as leader of the NRA by Wang Jingwei. Now the NRA was divided into the Wuhan government of Wang Jingwei and the Nanjing government of Chiang Kai-Shek. Chiang Kai-Shek decided the time was ripe to purge his forces of the CCP.

With the NRA divided, the NPA began a counter offensive taking back vast amounts of lost territory and it seemed the Northern Expedition was in trouble.
