For the past month, the battle for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut has been the focal point of Russia’s nearly year-long war. Unlike in previous battles, a disproportionate share of the fighting and dying on the Russian side has been done by the Wagner Group. A Ukrainian military intelligence document reveals how effective the Wagnerites have been around Bakhmut. The Kyiv report concludes that Wagner represents a unique threat at close quarters, even while suffering extraordinary casualties. “The deaths of thousands of Wagner soldiers do not matter to Russian society,” the report asserts.
