A Suicide Boat Attack Leaves the USS Cole Reeling from the Damage | Combat Ships

On October 12, 2000, a suicide boat packed with 400 pounds of explosives, detonated near the USS Cole, causing a massive hole in its steel hull. Seventeen soldiers lost their lives in the attack. Executed by Al-Qaeda, the attack was a propaganda win and recruiting tool for the terrorist organization. Less than a year later, they would launch an even more audacious attack.
