The era of a legendary workhorse is coming to an abrupt end. Under a new directive issued in May twenty twenty-six, the U.S. Marine Corps has finalized its timeline to fully retire the legacy F/A-18 Hornet fleet by twenty thirty. This aggressive aviation overhaul, known as Project Eagle, represents a massive structural shift. Marine leadership is consciously trading raw fleet size for pure, high-end digital readiness, liquidating its fourth-generation fighters to transition entirely to an all-stealth fifth-generation force. According to the newly released twenty twenty-six Marine Aviation Plan, the Corps is building toward a highly consolidated inventory of four hundred twenty F-35 Lightning two aircraft. For an institution that has relied on the versatile Hornet to blast ground targets and clear the skies since nineteen eighty-three, the final countdown to retirement has officially begun.
