In a shock £150 million move, the UK Ministry of Defence recently sold two of its massive Wave class fast fleet tankers, RFA Wave Knight and RFA Wave Ruler, to the private marine operator Inocea Group. But why is Britain selling off highly capable naval assets instead of keeping them in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA)?
In this video, we dive deep into the severe manpower crisis crippling the RFA, forcing the MoD to shed these 31,500-tonne vessels. We explore the massive shift toward contractorised naval logistics, examining Inocea’s highly successful “Provision of Services Agreement” modelled on Canada’s MV Asterix. We’ll also break down the critical differences between the older Wave class and the newer, highly automated Tide class tankers to see if the MoD made the right call. Can civilian crews safely support frontline warships in active combat zones, or is the Royal Navy sacrificing sustained combat power for short-term budget cuts?
Let us know your thoughts in the comments: Is privatising logistics a necessary evolution or a dangerous band-aid for an underfunded military?
