Why T72 and T90 Crews HATED Their Life
The T-72 was designed as a cheap mobilization tank for a conscript army. The T-90 is the same tank with fifty years of upgrades bolted on. Both still carry 22 rounds in an unprotected carousel under the crew, and that one decision has followed them through every war since. The video covers why the T-72 was built the way it was. It starts with the T-34, the T-54 and T-55, and the revolutionary but unreliable T-64. Then it gets into Object 172, the simplified version that became the T-72 main battle tank. The video covers what it was like to sit inside one. Three men, a 125 mm smoothbore gun, 70 km/h on the road, and a reverse gear of just 5 km/h. It explains how the autoloader carousel works and why the propellant charges under the floor are the weakest point in the design. The video gets into the combat record. Lebanon, the Iran Iraq war, Desert Storm against the Abrams, and the first Chechen war. It covers the New Year’s Eve 1994 assault on Grozny, where Chechen RPG teams trapped a Russian armored column and destroyed over 100 of 120 vehicles in two days. The video then covers how the T-90 was born out of that disaster and a logistics nightmare with three Soviet tanks in service. It gets into Contact 5 reactive armor, the Shtora jamming system, Dagestan in 1999, Syria in 2015, and the Ukraine war, where drones and Javelin missiles changed the math for every tank. Finally the video covers what a shaped charge, a kinetic penetrator, or a non-penetrating hit means for the three men inside, and why the carousel problem was never solved. Unbelievable True Stories makes military history documentaries about wars, weapons, and the machines and people who had to operate them.
