When Germany lost World War II in 1945, the age of the JagdPanzer seemed to end. But just twelve years later, the newly formed Bundeswehr was fielding vehicles that looked suspiciously familiar — low, angular, casemate tank destroyers straight out of the Wehrmacht’s playbook.
We’ll look at how Allied restrictions, Cold War politics, and leftover Wehrmacht doctrine shaped these strange machines and how a design philosophy born in the 1940s refused to die.
This is the story of Germany’s last JagdPanzers — from the failed HS 30 and the KanonenJagdPanzer 1-3 of 1957 all the way up to the Jaguar 1A3 of 2005.
