The frontline armored vehicles of the United States Marine Corps are getting a futuristic upgrade to survive the modern battlefield. Moving rapidly to counter the deadly rise of low-cost kamikaze drones and advanced anti-tank guided missiles, the service has announced plans to outfit its eight-by-eight Amphibious Combat Vehicles with hard-kill Active Protection Systems. These systems utilize a miniature network of vehicle-mounted radar panels and infrared cameras to constantly scan the surrounding airspace. The moment an incoming missile or explosive drone is detected racing toward the vehicle, the computer automatically calculates its trajectory in milliseconds. It then launches a high-speed physical interceptor projectile to detonate and destroy the threat mid-air before it can make impact. This technology turns the vulnerable armor hull into an active, self-defending shield.
