Economist Jeffrey Sachs has accused the United States and its European allies of provoking and prolonging the Ukraine war, claiming it began with a U.S.-backed coup against former President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014. In a fiery statement, Sachs said Washington pursued NATO expansion against Russia’s red lines, while Germany and France failed to uphold the 2015 Minsk peace deal. He alleged that early peace talks in 2022 were blocked by the West and warned that over a million Ukrainians have been killed or wounded since. Sachs urged an immediate settlement based on Ukrainian neutrality, accusing German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron of being “warmongers” pushing Europe toward “madness.”
