Development of the Charles de Gaulle started in the 1970s for a replacement for the French aircraft carrier fleet then aged, reaching a total of two ships: the Clemenceau and the Foch.
But the Charles de Gaulle is not without its problems, much of its life it spends in or going to maintenance – keeping it from active duty. A major refit in 2007 updated systems and offered new compatibility with more modern aircraft types.
