The HORRORS of M1 Carbine

The HORRORS of M1 Carbine

American soldiers spent three wars trying to swap their M1 Carbines for anything with more stopping power. The rifle that was supposed to be a lightweight solution for support troops ended up in the hands of paratroopers and frontline infantry, and the problems started almost immediately.

This video covers the full story of the M1 Carbine, from the absurd 13-day deadline Winchester had to design it, to the reports from soldiers in the Pacific who said they were putting rounds into charging enemies without dropping them. You’ll learn why the round’s full metal jacket design created a bullet that was too fast to act like a pistol round but too slow to act like a rifle round, passing straight through targets without transferring enough energy to stop the fight.

The video gets into Korea, where the carbine’s short-stroke gas system had zero mechanical margin in sub-zero temperatures. Lubricants thickened, propellant lost velocity, and the weapon just stopped working. Then there’s Vietnam, where the carbine’s compact size actually made it popular with South Vietnamese troops, and why they were reluctant to trade them for M1 Garands despite the power difference.

The last section covers modern ballistic testing that debunked the frozen clothing myth and explains what was actually happening with the wound channels that made soldiers lose confidence in the weapon.
