SAN Air Defense: Poland’s Answer to Drone Warfare

Poland is building one of Europe’s most ambitious counter-drone systems with SAN Air Defense System, a $4 billion program designed to counter the growing threat of low-cost UAVs seen in the war in Ukraine.
Developed by Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa with support from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, SAN is a layered system combining guns, electronic warfare, rockets, and potentially interceptor drones to handle mass drone attacks at a much lower cost than traditional missile defenses like Patriot missile system.
With 18 batteries and over 50 firing platoons planned, SAN is designed to fill a critical gap in Poland’s multi-layered air defense network alongside Wisła, Narew, and Pilica systems. While still unproven in combat, it reflects a major shift toward scalable, cost-effective air defense built specifically for drone-heavy warfare.
