For the first time in nearly forty years, the British Army is replacing its standard rifle. The SA80, specifically the L85A3, has been one of the most controversial weapons in NATO service. Loved by some, hated by many, and upgraded repeatedly, it’s finally on its way out.

The Ministry of Defence has launched Project Grayburn, a program to choose the SA80’s successor before the rifle’s retirement in 2030. This isn’t just a gear swap. The decision will shape how Britain fights its future wars, balancing NATO interoperability, soldier feedback, and domestic manufacturing.

In this video, we break down the contenders — from Beretta’s NARP and Sako M23, to Heckler & Koch’s HK416 and HK433, to SIG Sauer’s MCX family and more. We’ll cover their performance, weight, pros and cons, and what each option says about the UK’s priorities.
