TOMORROW, the 360 people of Piddington will vote on whether to secede from the UK, in protest at an asylum centre opening near their Oxfordshire village. The referendum is wholly symbolic. But symbolism matters — this is revolution in England’s prosperous heartland. With anti-migrant protests in Portsmouth evoking a similar malaise, albeit in a more militant fashion, Westminster is scrambling to respond.
