Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte has demanded allies produce ‘credible’ spending plans at next month’s summit in Ankara after the UK’s defence shortfall was exposed.
Its Defence Minister John Healey quit after insufficient funds were allocated for the UK’s defence plan.
The new Defence Minister, Dan Jarvis has attended a Nato meeting where US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth launched a scathing attack on some Nato allies, accusing them of failing to invest adequately in their own defence while announcing a six-month review of the American military presence in Europe.
Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte declined to directly criticise Washington, instead urging alliance unity ahead of the Nato summit on July 7.
The UK is currently engulfed in an intense row over defence spending with Keir Starmer’s government accused of failing to allocate sufficient funds to the military.
