CIA director John Ratcliffe has flown to Russia for talks in Moscow, a source with knowledge of the matter has told our US partner NBC News.
They did not confirm who he would be meeting or what the talks would be about.
Ratcliffe’s surprise visit was first announced by a CBS News reporter.
The mystery of a US military plane flying into Moscow has been “intriguing Russia watchers all day”, says international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn.
The Globemaster aircraft normally carries vehicles for international trips, such as Donald Trump’s heavily armoured Cadillac One for presidential visits, Waghorn explains.
“There were also pictures of American diplomatic plated cars driving through Moscow, filmed by other motorists,” he adds.
