Indonesia’s wildfires have triggered a severe transboundary haze crisis across Malaysian Borneo, with hazardous air pollution forcing school closures and driving a sharp rise in respiratory illness. Kuching’s Air Pollutant Index reached 407, while nearby Serian recorded 408. Malaysia reported 1,811 asthma cases in one week, compared with 219 the previous week, while nearly 600 schools around Kuching closed, affecting about 200,000 students. In Indonesia, more than 13,500 people sought treatment for respiratory infections during July and August. ASEAN has activated its highest transboundary haze alert as fires, dry peatlands and El Niño conditions threaten to prolong the crisis.
