Some versions are even designed to remain dormant for weeks, ignoring dozens of ships until a high-value target—like a Gerald R. Ford class carrier—passes overhead. This ‘Target Discrimination’ makes traditional demining efforts nearly impossible, as the mines can ‘hide’ from active sonar by mimicking the acoustic clutter of the rocky seabed.
