As Operation Southern Spear begins, the USS Gerald R. Ford is demonstrating why it is the most advanced warship ever built. At the heart of its flight deck is E-M-A-L-S—the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System. For over sixty years, carriers relied on massive, complex steam catapults to fling jets into the sky. E-M-A-L-S replaces those steam pipes with a powerful linear induction motor. This technology allows for a much smoother acceleration, reducing the physical ‘stress’ on the airframes of F-thirty-five and Super Hornet jets. More importantly, it is highly adjustable; it can launch heavy, fuel-laden strike fighters or light, unmanned ‘Ghost Fleet’ drones with the same precision. By removing the need for a massive steam plant, the Ford gains significant internal space and reduces the maintenance ‘downtime’ that plagues older carriers in high-heat environments like the Arabian Sea.
