How Europe Can Defend Itself with Less America

With the war in Ukraine ongoing and a potential drawdown of U.S. forces in Europe on the Horizon, European leaders are facing renewed pressure to strengthen and integrate their own defense capabilities. Max Bergmann, Director of the CSIS Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program, discusses the current role of the U.S. military in Europe’s ability to defend itself, the vulnerabilities that could result from a significant reduction of U.S. forces, and what must be done to address them.

This analysis draws on findings and recommendations from the recent CSIS report How Europe Can Defend Itself with Less America, co-authored with CSIS Associate Fellow, Otto Svendsen. The report identify tangible steps Europe should take to bolster its defenses and deter further Russian aggression with reduced U.S. support.
