With formation order No. 40 of 16.02.1957 the formation of the Guard Battalion at the Federal Ministry of Defense (WachBtl BMVg) was ordered. Primarily with conscripts, it has provided the main protocol mission since 1961. Every year the battalion through almost 1,500 soldiers. The soldiers of the guard battalion are trained as protocol, guard and security soldiers. They pay military honors to official visitors of the Federal President, the Federal Chancellor, the Federal Minister of Defense and the inspectors, according to their protocolary rank. military honors in accordance with their protocol rank. Due to the custom of international protocol, the wearing of beards is not permitted. Basic training is followed by 30 days of protocol training. This has as its main focus drill with the Carbine 98k, the representative rifle of the Guard Battalion. In addition to a variety of different protocol assignments, the missions to the Federal President, the Federal Chancellor, the Federal Minister of Defense and the Great Taps in honor of high-ranking personalities and public appearances at music festivals are always a highlight in the military everyday life of the Guard Battalion. Since November 2008, Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Göttelmann has been at the helm of this unique unit as its 18th commander since its formation. At this year’s Berlin Military Music Festival the Guard Battalion will present itself at the Federal Ministry of Defense with an honorary formation, provided by the 3rd Company from Siegburg, the Drilleam, provided by the 7th Company from Berlin and in cooperation with the marching band of the Staff Music Corps of the Bundeswehr.
