Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia is prepared to escalate the conflict in Ukraine while reinforcing its nuclear deterrence, announcing that the Oreshnik hypersonic missile system will be placed on combat duty by the end of the year. Speaking at an expanded meeting of the Defence Ministry board, Putin said Russia’s strategic nuclear forces would remain the main guarantor of security and global balance, alongside advanced systems such as Burevestnik and Poseidon. He accused NATO of standing behind Kyiv and said Moscow would pursue its military objectives if diplomacy fails, signalling a long-term confrontation under hardened nuclear cover.
