China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (or PLAN) has expanded rapidly over the past two decades. However, there remains limited understanding about its key strengths and weaknesses. We analyze in detail the capabilities and constraints of the PLA Navy, including its Type 052D and Type 055 destroyers, its conventional attack submarines, its naval logistics fleet, its nuclear submarines, and its aircraft carriers and naval aviation.
