Sweden’s Kreuger XR: The Drone Hunter Just Leveled Up! Man, I’ve been talking about Sweden a lot lately…
Back in April, I reported on Sweden’s Kreuger drone interceptor, an incredibly cheap, battery-powered FPV hunter designed to clear the skies without million-dollar missiles. Now, Nordic Air Defense has announced the next step: the Kreuger XR. And this new version is a whole new class of counter-drone weapon.
In this video, I break down exactly what makes the Kreuger XR different:
• A thermal seeker that can track targets day or night.
• A warhead, which means it doesn’t only collide with enemy drones anymore, it destroys them.
• Longer range and loiter time, giving Ukrainian soldiers more time to hunt targets beyond line of sight.
• And most importantly: a software-first design that can be patched overnight. New Russian tactics? Firmware update. New countermeasures? Update the code.
I’ll also dive into how the economics of drone warfare are shifting. Russia floods the battlefield with cheap Shahed drones and FPVs, hoping to exhaust Ukraine’s defenses. The Kreuger flips that math by giving defenders interceptors that cost a few thousand dollars instead of hundreds of thousands. When you can field thousands of Kreugers, you force the enemy to pay more for every attack than you do to defend against it.
Nordic Air Defense is already flying test missions two to three times a week, and they’re building out a European supply chain to avoid sanctions bottlenecks. On top of that, Volvo Defense is developing a vehicle-mounted launcher called Vipro, which turns Kreugers into modular, scalable air-defense nodes that can be integrated into NATO’s networks.
Of course, there are challenges, EW spoofing, software vulnerabilities, and the ethical questions of semi-autonomous interceptors. But the bottom line is this: if the Kreuger XR delivers at scale, it could redefine how Europe and Ukraine fight the drone war.
