During WWII the US and UK deployed some 400,000 mines. Most of these mines were defensive contact type mines. The mines laid against Japan were responsible for sinking or damaging 2 Battleships, 2 Aircraft Carriers, 8 Cruisers and 38 Destroyers. Japan’s ports were virtually closed by the mining conducted during operation starvation, the B-29 offensive mining campaign. A Japanese admiral stated had the mining program started 3 months earlier, Japan would have likely surrendered 3 months earlier.
