It’s November 7th, 1944. A flight of twelve P38 Lightnings led by Colonel Clarence ‘Curly’ Edwinson is on a search & destroy mission in the area of Niš, in southern Serbia. They spot a convoy on the move, perfectly fitting the description of their target: the defeated Wehrmacht units bailing out of the Balkans. But they’re wrong – in the column are Soviet and Yugoslav troops, pursuing the retreating Germans northward. Unknowingly, the American fighters attack their allies, and the Soviet Air Force, from the nearby Niš airfield, rises to meet them. This is the story of how the Soviet Yak’s and American Lightnings danced over Niš.
