This year’s operational theme was Eyes in the Skies, drawing rare participants such as a French Navy Atlantique II, US Air Force U-2S, Royal Air Force Rivet Joint R.1 and a not-yet-in-service Wedgetail AEW.1 for the flying display. The theme also marked 80 years of helicopter search and rescue; a Portuguese Merlin and Swedish Hkp16 Blackhawk both made their RIAT debuts, while the Czech Air Force’s W-3A Sokols flew at the show for the last time.
Fast jet highlights included memorable displays from the Danish F-16AM, Polish F-16C, Spanish C.16 Tifon and Finnish F/A-18C Hornet.
Italy’s national aerobatic team, the Frecce Tricolori, attended the show, marking their 65th anniversary season. Furthermore, a Fiat G.91 in team colours joined the line up – the first time the type has been seen at a UK airshow for decades.
Static display highlights included the Egyptian An-74 and Pakistani JF-17Cs.
