Russia is making bold moves in the U.S.’ backyard. A Russian transport plane linked to the Wagner Group landed in Venezuela — sending shockwaves through the U.S. Tensions have surged as Washington, D.C. accuses Caracas of supporting drug-trafficking and threatening regional security. In response, the U.S. has deployed 10,000 troops to the Caribbean, supported by warships, F-35 fighter jets, a nuclear-powered attack submarine and a floating base for special forces. Covert C.I.A. operations have also been authorised by the Trump Government. Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro accused the U.S. of orchestrating a regime-change operation. Venezuela is now at the centre of a high-stakes geopolitical showdown. Russia has strengthened ties with President Maduro, providing over $4 billion in weapons, training Venezuelan troops, and embedding Wagner mercenaries to bolster security and defensive operations. A strategic partnership treaty signed by Putin and Maduro in 2025 further solidifies Moscow’s growing foothold in the region. Venezuela’s strategic location near the Panama Canal and its vast oil resources make it a critical battleground. As Russia and China expand their influence, the U.S. is scrambling to maintain its dominance. The Caribbean has become a chessboard of global power rivalry, with Venezuela at its centre.
