On 22 September 1980, Saddam Hussein launched
an Iraqi invasion of neighbouring Iran. Days later, ITN’s Jon Snow travelled to the frontline
to report on the conflict as Iranian forces, still
reeling in the aftermath of revolution, fought a
determined resistance against the invading Iraqis. The Iran-Iraq War would rage for the next eight years,
reshaping the region and setting in motion a chain
of events that would define the world
as we know it today. Presented here is a series of reports covering
the first months of fighting in the Iranian border province of Khuzestan, in particular the port city of Khorramshahr, Abadan oil refinery, and the Shatt-al-Arab waterway.
