Hill 314. You’ve probably never heard of it. But for the men of the 30th Infantry Division, it became a living nightmare. Surrounded. Cut off. Outnumbered 10 to 1. From August 6–12, 1944, a single hill above Mortain turned into one of the bloodiest battles in Normandy.
While most people remember D-Day and Operation Cobra, few know what happened next — when Patton’s breakout was nearly shattered by Hitler’s last-ditch counterattack. Facing them? The 2nd SS Panzer Division “Das Reich”, elite grenadiers and battle-hardened veterans fresh from the Eastern Front.
This was Normandy’s forgotten bloodbath where American GIs held a hill against Waffen-SS tanks, 88mm guns, and relentless infantry assaults. Cut off from supplies, surrounded by corpses, they refused to surrender. Hill 314 would become known as “The Lost Battalion” — but what happened there has nearly vanished from memory… until now.
