This is the story of the bridge everyone forgets about when discussing Operation Market Garden, the first bridge that was captured by the 3rd Battalion, Irish Guards and held against strong German counterattacks on 10/11 September 1944. The name of this structure is ‘Joe’s Bridge’ and it was the launch pad from which Montgomery started the ground element of Market Garden on 17 September racing north to relieve the surrounded US and British paratroopers.
Special thanks to Lieutenant-Colonel Ben Irwin-Clark, Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, Irish Guards and to Major Bryn Reeves, Lieutenant Charlie West and Irish Guards archivist Bill Green for their kind assistance.
